After cutting with a knife, switch the fork to your other hand. In Europe, it's ok to keep your fork in the same hand after cutting. The European method is starting to become more popular in the U.S.
Should I pickup a dropped fork?
Let the waitperson pick it up. You or someone else may accidentally use it if you put it on your table.
Why does someone have to "taste" wine before drinking it?
If you order the wine, you should taste it. You're verifying that the wine hasn't gone bad. You should also check the cork out (visually) to make sure it hasn't broken apart.
When do I order red wine versus white wine?
If you're among sophisticated wine drinkers, it really doesn't matter. However, since most people know the rule of white wine with white meat and red wine with red meat, you may want to stick to it as a general rule of thumb.
Do I have to send a Thank You note?
You really should, but few people do nowadays. If you do send a Thank You note, you will stand out in that person's mind as being a very thoughtful person. You decide if it's worth the effort.
How do I give a toast?
Try to keep the toast short, flattering and memorable. If you're in a large group, stand to get attention. End the toast with an upbeat statement.
How do I receive a toast?
Remain seated during the toast. Don't take a drink if the toast is being offered to you. Always thank the person after the toast is finished.
